The Tropic Marin Nitrite/Nitrate Test (NO2/NO3) is an easy-to-use water test for your saltwater aquarium. It includes everything (solution + accessories) you need to successfully measure your nitrate (NO3) and nitrite (NO2) levels. The water test is easy to use and provides accurate results.
Tropic Marin Nitrite/Nitrate Test (NO2/NO3) - For determining nitrite and nitrate concentrations
Nitrite ions (NO2–) and nitrate ions (NO3–) are produced from ammonium (NH4+) during the nitrification process. In the first stage of this bacterial process, nitrite is formed, which is highly toxic to freshwater organisms. In a properly functioning nitrification process, the nitrite is converted to nitrate in the second stage. In saltwater aquariums, elevated nitrate concentrations can disrupt the growth of sensitive corals. A danger posed by high nitrate levels in all aquariums is the strong promotion of algae growth. In rare cases, nitrate deficiency can also occur. Therefore, the nitrite and nitrate concentrations in the aquarium water should be checked regularly.
In general, nitrite levels in all aquariums should be kept below 0.2 mg/l whenever possible. In saltwater aquariums, nitrate concentrations should not exceed 20 mg/l. When keeping stony corals, nitrate levels below 10 mg/l are recommended. For nitrate in freshwater aquariums, levels below 50 mg/l are recommended. The lower limits for nitrate depend on the general conditions in the aquarium.
The Tropic Marin® Nitrite/Nitrate Test allows for the precise measurement of nitrite levels from 0 to 2 mg/l and nitrate concentrations from 0.5 to 50 mg/l using finely graduated color scales.

Recommended Use
Nitrite Determination
Shake the dropper bottles before use!
Rinse the glass cuvette with tap water and then several times with aquarium water.
Using the dosing syringe, fill the glass cuvette with exactly 5 ml of aquarium water.
Add 5 drops of Test Reagent A, close the glass cuvette with the stopper, and shake the solution briefly.
Add 2 drops of test reagent C, reseal the glass cuvette, and shake briefly.
After a 3-minute development time, place the glass cuvette on the white circles of the nitrite color chart and compare it to the corresponding color fields in daylight. To do this, look down into the open cuvette from above. Move the sample on the color chart until the cuvette and the color patch above it show the same color. If the colors do not match exactly, an intermediate value must be determined.
Read the measured nitrite value under the corresponding color field.
Nitrate Determination
Shake the dropper bottles before use!
Rinse the glass cuvette with tap water and then several times with aquarium water.
Using the dosing syringe, fill the glass cuvette with exactly 5 ml of aquarium water.
Add 10 drops of Test Reagent A, seal the glass cuvette with the stopper, and shake the solution briefly.
Shake the bottle containing test reagent B very vigorously in a horizontal position for about 30 seconds (the reagent must be thoroughly mixed). Then add 10 drops of test reagent B, reseal the cuvette, shake briefly, and set aside.
After a 3-minute development time, add 4 drops of Test Reagent C, reseal the glass cuvette, and shake briefly.
After an additional 3-minute development time, open the test cuvette, place it on the white circles of the nitrate color chart, and compare it to the corresponding color fields in daylight. To do this, look down into the open cuvette from above. Move the sample on the color chart until the cuvette and the color field above it show the same color. If the colors do not match exactly, an intermediate value must be determined.
Read the measured nitrate value under the corresponding color field. Correct the reading if necessary.
After the measurement, thoroughly rinse the glass cuvette and syringe with tap water.
Note
Nitrite concentrations affect the nitrate measurement; therefore, the nitrite concentration should also be measured before performing the nitrate test, and the nitrate results should be corrected accordingly using the table if necessary. High nitrite levels occur primarily in aquariums during the cycling phase or in tanks with nitrate filters.
Shelf Life
The reagents are stable for 6 months after opening. Store in a cool, dark place.
