sango chem-balance Ca-2 is the second component of the SANGOKAI BALANCE system for stabilizing calcium levels. It is directly linked to the calcium dosing provided by sango chem-balance Ca-1 and balances the chloride input from calcium, strontium, and rubidium chloride against the other major elements—sulfur (as sulfate), magnesium, potassium, bromide, fluoride, and iodide. This results in a very stable and consistent seawater composition, which is the foundation for healthy and sustainable tank development.

At a salinity of 35 psu (psu = practical salinity unit, or g/kg or per mille), chloride (Cl-) is, with approximately 19,500 mg/kg (19.5 g/kg) and a concentration of approximately 550 millimoles per kilogram (mM/kg), the most abundant component in seawater by molar quantity, followed by sodium at approximately 470 mM/kg. Thus, chloride and sodium together account for over 85% by mass of the salt composition of seawater. All marine organisms are extremely well adapted to this salt concentration and its specific NaCl-rich composition and are equipped to regulate the abundantly available sodium and chloride.

This raises the fundamental question: Why could chloride enrichment caused by a one-sided calcium chloride dosing—for example, using the sango chem-balance Ca-1—be a problem at all? After all, the chloride content in seawater is so high that it should make hardly any physiological difference whether there are a few hundred milligrams per kilogram more or less in the water. Presumably, even though the composition of seawater in nature is highly constant for a given oceanic habitat, this is also the reason why the wide variety of formulations and compositions of synthetic seawater mixes has nevertheless enabled very successful care—at least for corals—for decades. Nevertheless, the absolute concentration of chloride relative to the concentrations of the other seawater components and relative to salinity is a factor that must be taken into account.

Adding chloride alone increases salinity, which in absolute terms is not a problem; however, in relative terms, as chloride salinity rises, the concentration of all other seawater constituents decreases. The concentration of important elements such as potassium, boron, or magnesium therefore decreases as the chloride concentration in seawater increases. You can prevent this loss of important seawater constituents by adding sango chem-balance Ca-2 in exactly the same dose as sango chem-balance Ca-1. This allows you to easily maintain a constant seawater composition in your reef aquarium and avoid the need for water changes to maintain the seawater composition.
