How to maintain a beautiful aquarium free of pesky algae: Diatoms form brownish coatings on plants, the substrate, and decorations. They form when your water contains more than 0.4 mg/l of silicic acid/silicates (SiO₂). Most often, the silicic acid comes from your tap water. Diatoms use this silicic acid to build their skeletons. To control them, simply remove the silicic acid from the water, and the algae will die off or be unable to form in the first place. Diatoms are neither toxic nor harmful. In Africa’s Lake Tanganyika and Lake Malawi, they even form part of the food source for algae-eating cichlids. Since the algae form brownish coatings that we consider unsightly, we want to remove them from aquariums. Distinguishing Between Diatoms and Slime Algae Both types of algae can look very similar. However, if you rub them between your fingers, you can feel the difference: Slime algae feel slimy and sticky even when rubbed for an extended period, whereas diatoms feel rough. Special Filtration SilikatEx Rapid removes silicate from freshwater and saltwater aquariums. This deprives unwanted diatoms (brown coatings)—which often appear after adding fresh water—of their food source. Among other things, SilikatEx Rapid also removes phosphate, thereby controlling the growth of other algae. The filter media creates living conditions appropriate for the biotope.
