Axolotls are amphibians, like newts and frogs. Unlike other amphibians, they retain their larval stage—with external gill tufts—for their entire lives. Axolotls are native to a high-altitude lake in Mexico that once had low temperatures around 20 °C. Today, Mexico City has expanded to the point where the lake lies within the city limits and, due to trash and other pollution, is virtually devoid of life. As a result, the axolotl is considered extinct in its original habitat.

Axolotls locate their food using their sense of smell and with the help of mechanoreceptors, which—similar to the lateral line organ in fish—detect flow and vibration stimuli. Consequently, live food and food with an “interesting” scent, such as JBL PRONOVO LOTL, are ideal for a species-appropriate diet. In the wild, they lie in wait for their prey and eat crayfish, insect larvae, small fish, and even small members of their own species.
