There is hardly a fish that does not eat insects and/or shrimp in the wild! Only a few highly specialized fish species, such as freshwater scale eaters (Plecodus straelini) or marine coral polyp eaters (many butterflyfish), eat neither insects nor shrimp. However, if you offer them these foods in the aquarium, they will often accept them. All other fish species eat insects (e.g., insect larvae in algae beds) and/or shrimp, either directly or indirectly. For many fish, this is even reflected in the name of their dietary classification, and they are referred to as “insectivorous.” The famous archerfish, which spits insects off leaves, is perhaps the best-known example!
That’s why JBL has placed much greater emphasis on insects in the feed formulations of the JBL PRONOVO line—but, of course, only when the target fish species include insects in their diet. Mixing insects into EVERY fish food just because it’s trendy makes no sense! JBL PRONOVO INSECT is now available for the targeted feeding of insects to your fish!
Whole insects or insect larvae as fish food?
Well, it’s easy to see that we shouldn’t process large beetles as insect-based fish food. The chitin content in their exoskeletons would be far too high! Mealworms would be easy to obtain—but they contain too much fat. The search for the “ideal” insect led to soldier flies (Hermetia illucens, abbreviated as BSF), but in their larval stage. Larvae have 12 times the nutritional value of the adult flies and a consistent composition. Black soldier flies are bred on a large scale and do not need to be taken from the wild. Since the larvae feed on both animal and plant protein, their composition is perfect for fish. The protein in the larvae is characterized by a high vitamin concentration, high biological value (amino acids), and excellent digestibility.
