In the past, almost every aquarist used to catch water fleas in the wild and feed them to their fish. Today, this is very often prohibited for conservation reasons, and many bodies of water are now so heavily polluted that one should no longer catch feed animals without hesitation. JBL uses trusted suppliers who have legal access to absolutely clean bodies of water with undisturbed water flea populations. The water fleas are sun-dried and packaged immediately after being caught. This preserves their valuable nutrients and dietary fiber, which benefit the diet of ornamental fish.

Water fleas (Daphnia): They grow to 1–5 mm in size and, biologically speaking, belong to the order Daphniida and are thus freshwater plankton found in still waters.
They are not to be confused with stream fleas (Gammarus), which can grow up to 2 cm long, look completely different, tend to live in flowing waters, and belong to the amphipod order. Cyclops, on the other hand, are much smaller (0.5–1 mm) and belong to the copepods.

To diversify the diet of ornamental fish, supplementing their main food with freeze-dried food varieties is highly recommended.
