JBL NO2 Nitrite Test: Rapid test for determining nitrite levels in freshwater and saltwater aquariums and ponds
Simple and safe monitoring of water parameters in aquariums and ponds.
Checking the biological balance (bacterial activity) in freshwater and saltwater
Laboratory comparator system to compensate for natural water coloration: Fill glass cuvettes with sample water, add reagents to a cuvette, place cuvettes in the holder, and read the values on the color chart
Usage: For new freshwater setups: daily for 3 weeks. For new saltwater setups: once a week
In cases of fish diseases or fish mortality
Online Lab: Free analysis and recommendations based on your measured water parameters

A healthy aquarium or pond with conditions close to nature
The correct water parameters in an aquarium or pond depend on the fish population and the plants present. Even if the water looks clear, it may still be contaminated. If water parameters are poor, diseases or algae can develop in the aquarium or pond. To maintain a healthy aquarium or pond with conditions close to nature, it is important to regularly monitor and adjust water parameters. For every water analysis, JBL offers water tests in the form of rapid tests or color-change tests. These determine a specific parameter or multiple parameters simultaneously. These water tests can help identify algae problems and detect elevated levels of nitrate, nitrite, potassium, magnesium, etc. Why test: Nitrite is produced when bacteria break down protein and ammonia. It is normally converted into non-toxic nitrate. In aquarium and pond water, nitrite (NO₂) should not be detectable. If nitrite is detectable, however, the bacterial breakdown process is disrupted, and at concentrations of 0.4 mg/l or higher, it becomes dangerous or even fatal to fish, as nitrite blocks oxygen transport in the animals’ blood. This can be remedied by water changes and good bacterial starters such as JBL Denitrol or JBL BactoPond. Recommended nitrite levels: Freshwater aquarium (community aquarium): 0–0.2 mg/l; Malawi and Lake Tanganyika aquariums: 0–0.2 mg/l Planted aquariums with few fish (aquascaping): 0–0.2 mg/l Marine aquariums: 0–0.2 mg/l Ponds: 0–0.2 mg/l
