A healthy aquarium or pond with conditions
close to nature The correct water parameters in an aquarium or pond depend on the fish population and the plants present. Even if the water looks clear, it may still be contaminated. If the parameters are poor, diseases or algae can develop in the aquarium or pond. To maintain a healthy aquarium or pond with conditions close to nature, it is important to regularly monitor and adjust water parameters. For every water analysis, JBL offers water tests in the form of rapid tests or color-change tests. These determine a specific parameter or multiple parameters simultaneously. These water tests can help identify algae problems and detect unfavorable levels of nitrate, nitrite, potassium, magnesium, etc. Why test? Depending on the origin and composition of the substrate, water can contain varying amounts of alkaline earth salts. These are typically calcium and magnesium salts. The sum of calcium and magnesium ions represents the total hardness. Most fish and plants can be successfully maintained at a total hardness of approximately 8–20°dH. Nevertheless, you should strive to reduce excessively high total hardness levels by taking appropriate measures. JBL Online Lab: Regular monitoring for a healthy aquarium or pond with conditions close to nature. Enter your water parameters in the JBL Online Lab and receive a detailed analysis of your results in a matter of seconds. Recommended total hardness values: Freshwater aquarium (community aquarium): 8–25 °dGH; Malawi and Lake Tanganyika aquariums: 5–20 °dGH; Planted aquariums with few fish (aquascaping): 3–10 °dGH Saltwater aquariums: Cannot be measured with a GH test because the levels are too high. Please test calcium and magnesium separately Ponds: 6–20 °dGH
