close to nature The correct water parameters in an aquarium or pond depend on the fish stock and the plants present. Even if the water looks clear, it may still be contaminated. If water parameters are poor, diseases or algae can develop in the aquarium or pond. To maintain a healthy aquarium or pond with conditions close to nature, it is important to regularly monitor and adjust water parameters. For every water analysis, JBL offers water tests in the form of rapid tests or color-change tests. These determine a specific parameter or multiple parameters simultaneously. These water tests can help identify algae problems and detect unfavorable levels of nitrate, nitrite, potassium, magnesium, etc. In addition to an adequate supply of CO₂, iron and trace elements are essential for aquatic plants. Since healthy, growing aquatic plants constantly consume iron and other trace elements—and since these are only stable in the water for a limited time even when bound to so-called chelators, as is common in modern fertilizers (e.g., JBL Ferropol, JBL Fe +Microelements), they can only be retained in the water for a limited time; therefore, the iron content must be monitored regularly using the JBL Iron Test Set Fe, and additional fertilizer must be added if necessary. Pond owners should check the iron content of their well water before using it in their pond. Excessively high iron levels lead to problems in the pond.
