CO2: The Elixir of Life for Every Aquarium
If you want a colorful, vibrant aquarium, CO2—or carbon dioxide—is your best friend. It’s like the elixir of life for your underwater world. Why is CO2 so important for your aquarium? The answer lies in the foundation of aquatic life—photosynthesis. Your aquatic plants need carbon dioxide to thrive, because CO2 is their primary food source. Without sufficient carbon dioxide, they cannot photosynthesize effectively—and that means they won’t produce enough oxygen, which in turn is vital for your fish and other aquarium inhabitants. A well-balanced CO2 level in the water therefore not only promotes plant growth but also helps keep your aquarium in a healthy balance.

An optimal CO2 supply is the key to a lush, vibrant aquarium. It allows your plants to grow stronger and more colorful—which in turn creates a natural and attractive environment for your fish and other inhabitants. It also helps control algae growth, since healthy plants consume nutrients that algae would otherwise use to grow.
Effective Algae Control in the Aquarium
And this is exactly where the CO2 system comes into play, becoming a life-giving element for your aquarium: Every bubble of carbon dioxide rising through the water is a breath of life. Your plants flourish, providing shelter and food for your fish and creating a vibrant, pulsating ecosystem. This harmonious balance, achieved through a finely tuned CO2 system, transforms your aquarium into a dynamic masterpiece where every living creature plays its own significant role. With a CO2 system, you’re not only infusing your aquarium with the essence of life, but also with that special sparkle that makes it shine.

How the ARKA mySCAPE-CO2 System Works
At the heart of this system is a high-quality, pressure-resistant stainless steel cylinder that sets the stage for a small chemical miracle. But how does it work?
Let’s start with the basic components:
- Material A: Citric acid
- Material B: Sodium bicarbonate, also known as baking soda
Both substances are included in the starter kit. Preparation is incredibly simple: First, add the specified amount of baking soda and citric acid to the cylinder—depending on the volume of your system. For the 2.4-liter system, you’ll need 400 g of each substance, while the 3.7-liter system is filled with 600 g of each. Thanks to the included funnel, filling the cylinder is a breeze.
The top of the cylinder also indicates exactly how many grams of each substance you need to fill your CO2 system. That way, nothing can go wrong.
After you’ve added both components, it’s time to add the (cold) water—about 600 ml for the smaller system and 900 ml for the larger one. But please don’t just pour the water straight down into the cylinder! Instead, hold the bottle at a slight angle (about 45°) so the water can flow smoothly through the funnel and the mixture doesn’t splash out. Because as soon as the water comes into contact with the other two materials, the magic begins: a bubbling chemical reaction is triggered, and carbon dioxide is produced.

A few more important tips:
- Add the water quickly, as the mixture reacts immediately. So screw the pressure regulator with the pressure gauge onto the opening as quickly as possible, and then place the cylinder in an upright position so that CO2 production isn’t impaired.
- As the chemical reaction proceeds, the stainless steel housing will fog up. It’s best to place the cylinder on a towel or in a tub so that the condensation doesn’t damage the surface it’s resting on.
- Don’t think that shaking the cylinder will speed up the chemical reaction or CO2 production. This happens all on its own; so just let the cylinder sit undisturbed and be patient—it’ll be worth it.
Step-by-Step Guide to Proper Installation and Use
Setting up and operating the ARKA mySCAPE-CO2 system is easier than you might think. Here’s a clear and simple step-by-step guide to easily setting up and using the system for your freshwater aquarium:
- Step: Connect
the pressure regulator to the filter. Remove the dust cap from the pressure regulator and screw the filter containing the drying beads into the designated opening. This filter prevents the solution from the cylinder from entering the regulator. - Step: Fill
the cylinder with the ingredients Pour the baking soda and citric acid into the cylinder. Then add the specified amount of water. Once that’s done, carefully seal the cylinder with the pressure regulator. You can also find detailed instructions for this step in the previous chapter. - Step: Prepare
the system for operation Due to the chemical reaction inside the cylinder, the internal pressure rises gradually. This can take about 3 to 6 hours. However, wait at least until the pressure in the system reaches 10 bar—that is, until it is within the green range on the pressure gauge. This minimum pressure is necessary so that the carbon dioxide produced can be “pushed” from the cylinder into the aquarium via the CO2 hose. - Step: Install
the bubble counter The bubble counter helps you monitor the amount of CO2 released. Insert it into the quick-release coupling by pressing it in, and fill it three-quarters full with water—preferably reverse-osmosis water. (This can be easily produced, for example, using the ARKA myAQUA 1900.) - Step: Connect
the CO2 hose to the systemUnscrew the cap from the bubble counter, thread the hose through the opening in the cap, and attach it to the top of the bubble counter. Now screw the cap back on to secure the hose in place.Tip from an aquarium proThe CO2 hose arrives rolled up, which can cause it to naturally kink. There’s a simple trick to straighten it: Submerge the hose in boiling water for a few minutes. Then use pliers to remove it and straighten it out with a towel. Hold it briefly in this straightened position. This will give you a smooth hose without any annoying kinks.
- Step: Attach
the check valve The check valve prevents water from flowing back into the system. You can connect the valve either directly to the diffuser or to the CO2 hose. To attach it to the hose, cut the hose at a suitable spot. A quick tip: Moisten the ends of the valve before slipping them onto the cut ends of the tubing. This ensures a secure connection. Also, pay attention to the valve’s flow direction—indicated by an arrow. - Step: Connect
the CO2 hose and diffuserConnect the CO2 hose to the diffuser. Here, too, moistening the end of the diffuser makes it easier to securely attach the tubing. Then, ideally, place the diffuser deep in the water and close to the flow source to optimize the distribution of carbon dioxide in the water. The included suction cups hold the diffuser securely in place. (The diffuser included in the set is a bit small. If you prefer a larger one or want to keep your old one, that’s no problem at all. Just leave out the included diffuser and use the model of your choice instead.)Tip from an Aquarium ExpertThe diffuser’s ceramic plate should fit snugly and be thoroughly soaked. This ensures that uniform and finely distributed CO2 bubbles are produced when you start up your system.
- Step: Install
the solenoid valve Connect the solenoid valve to a power source. It will open automatically—indicated by the illuminated indicator light—and begin supplying CO2. For automated control, you can optionally connect the valve to a timer. - Step: Adjust
the CO2 Flow Use the needle valve to precisely regulate the amount of CO2 being supplied. Be careful not to add too much CO2 to maintain the ecological balance in your aquarium.

Cleaning and Routine Maintenance: Tips and Tricks for a Long Service Life
To ensure that your aquatic plants always receive the ideal amount of CO2 and that your aquarium shines in all its glory, regular care and maintenance are essential. A few simple but important steps will help you keep your system in top condition and thus ensure the well-being of your underwater world.
Infographic: Cleaning & Maintenance Routine for the MySCAPE-CO2 System
Inspection → Maintenance → Cleaning → Replacing Parts
Component Maintenance: For Long-Term Performance
Remember: A well-maintained CO2 system not only guarantees an efficient CO2 supply but also supports the health and growth of your aquarium plants. With just a little time and care, your aquarium will remain a magnificent focal point.
For routine maintenance, you really just need to follow these steps:
- Check the drying beads for swelling or signs of wear. It’s best to wash the old beads with reverse osmosis water and let them dry completely. In the meantime, you can use the replacement beads provided.
- If necessary, use the hex key to loosen the quick-connect fitting on the bubble counter to clean the seal. Make sure it’s free of dirt and debris.
- Check the O-ring on the needle valve and the pressure regulator. If it is worn, replace it.
Cleaning the Solenoid Valve: How to Keep Your CO2 System in Top Condition
Cleaning the individual parts is not difficult at all. Just follow the instructions below, and your mySCAPE CO2 system will run like a charm:
- Basic Inspection: Start by carefully inspecting all parts. Look for dirt, deposits, or signs of wear.
- Cleaning the solenoid valve: If the valve doesn’t close or open properly, it may be affected by moisture or dirt. Disconnect it from the power source, unscrew it, and carefully remove the internal components (the insert and the spring).
- Clean the insert and spring: These small but essential parts should be handled with special care. Use isopropyl alcohol or another mild cleaning alcohol to gently clean the insert and spring. Be careful not to lose them, and make a note of their correct installation orientation.
- Let them dry completely: Make sure all parts are completely dry after cleaning before reassembling them. Residual moisture can cause corrosion or other problems!
- Establish a regular maintenance routine: Set specific times for maintaining and cleaning your system. Regular maintenance prevents unexpected malfunctions and ensures consistently optimal performance.
Replacing the fluid: When and how?
If the pressure gauge drops to zero, it’s time to refill the system. To be absolutely sure, remove the bubble counter and open the needle valve. If you hear little or no hissing, the cylinder is definitely empty and free of CO2.
Graphic: When to change the material in the mySCAPE-CO2 system
Here’s how to safely replace the materials:
- Check the pressure regulator and filter: Unscrew the pressure regulator and inspect both the threads and the gasket for moisture or dirt. The same applies to the filter: Remove it from the pressure regulator, unscrew it, and check the desiccant beads inside. If they’re sticky or dirty, rinse them out and let them dry. In the meantime, you can use the replacement beads.
- Clean the cylinder: It’s best to do this in the bathroom to avoid making a mess. Pour out the old water and rinse the cylinder a few times with tap water. Then shake it well and let it dry upside down. This is important to get rid of all water residue. As we know, we’ll need precise measurements later when refilling. Too much water in the cylinder would interfere with CO2 production.
- Refilling the cylinder: Once you’ve wiped the outside of the cylinder dry, it’s ready to be refilled.
Perfect CO2 control for your aquarium: The mySCAPE CO2 Checker
Too much or too little carbon dioxide? That is the question. With the mySCAPE CO2 Checker, you can shed light on the matter and ensure the perfect carbon dioxide level in your aquarium. Your plants will thank you with lush growth! Although the long-term test kit is not included in the mySCAPE CO2 system, it can easily be purchased separately in our Petonus online store.
It’s incredibly easy to use: Simply attach the CO2 Checker to the inside of the aquarium glass, with the opening facing down. Fill it with the continuous test solution so that the color is clearly visible. The standard concentration of 20 mg/l is ideal for most aquarium plants.
For more demanding plants, a higher concentration of 30 mg/l is recommended. You can find solutions for this, for example, at Aqua Rebell.

Aqua Rebell

Aqua Rebell
The mySCAPE-CO2 Checker comes with a special test solution containing bromothymol blue. This dye is a true miracle worker in carbon dioxide measurement, as it changes color depending on the CO2 concentration in the water. The color change is based on shifts in the pH level caused by dissolved carbon dioxide. This allows you to see at a glance whether the carbon dioxide level is optimal for your plants.
