H3: Reverse Osmosis Water—The Perfect Foundation for Your Aquarium
Water is the lifeblood of every aquarium. But not all water is equally suitable for the sensitive underwater world. This is where reverse osmosis water comes in. Reverse osmosis water is produced by reverse osmosis filters based on a semipermeable membrane. This technology allows only water molecules to pass through, while contaminants such as nitrate, heavy metals, or phosphate are retained. The result? Ultra-pure water that’s even used in laboratories and in space exploration.
Reverse osmosis water creates a clean, contaminant-free base—ideal as a starting point for saltwater and freshwater aquariums.
German tap water is often too hard or too soft for aquarium inhabitants and plants. Here, reverse osmosis water offers the ideal solution, as it creates a neutral and contaminant-free environment. This is especially essential for sensitive animals and plants, such as the popular Caridina shrimp, since reverse osmosis water is virtually free of harmful substances.
However, pure reverse osmosis water contains only a few minerals that are essential for the health of your aquarium animals, plants, and especially your filter bacteria. To optimally adjust the water for your aquarium, it is therefore necessary to add specific minerals, salts, and fertilizers to achieve the correct total hardness (°dGH). These adjustments are crucial for ensuring efficient biological filtration and promoting the well-being of your plants.
Using the practical method of “salting up,” you can transform reverse osmosis water into a true miracle elixir for your aquarium. This simple yet effective step allows you to tailor the water precisely to the individual needs of your underwater inhabitants. Simply add the appropriate salts or liquid hardness-boosting supplements and watch as the reverse osmosis water transforms into the ideal home for your fish and plants.
Reverse osmosis water is the ideal base, but it’s only through careful adjustment and treatment with minerals, salts, and fertilizers that it becomes the perfect habitat for your aquarium inhabitants.
A conductivity meter becomes your reliable companion in this situation. It guides you precisely to the optimal water parameters, ensuring you can achieve the perfect balance. This benefits not only your fish but also the plants in your aquarium. Monitoring nitrate and phosphate levels, for example, provides you with important insights for fertilizing your plants. By adding these nutrients in a targeted and careful manner, you enable your green charges to grow healthily and luxuriantly.

Features of the Arka 1900 Reverse Osmosis System
The Arka 1900 Reverse Osmosis System represents a revolutionary development in the world of aquariums by taking water purification technology to a new level. The system is designed to operate entirely without chemical additives, underscoring its eco-friendly and safe approach to water treatment. It places particular emphasis on the well-being of your aquarium’s inhabitants. A standout feature of the Arka Osmosis System 1900 is its remarkable adaptability—it operates efficiently across a wide temperature range of 5 to 38 °C. This feature makes it a versatile solution that can be easily integrated into various environments.

The Osmosis System 1900 redefines efficiency in water treatment by achieving an impressive water yield of up to 1:1, relying exclusively on natural filter materials without chemical additives. Thanks to the included accessories, it can be easily connected to standard household water lines. Its outstanding salt retention capacity of up to 99% guarantees the removal of nearly all contaminants and salts, which is essential for maintaining a healthy and stable habitat for sensitive aquarium inhabitants and plants. At the heart of this technological achievement lies a sophisticated, three-stage filtration system:
- a carbon filter that eliminates organic contaminants and chlorine.
- a membrane filter that filters out even the finest contaminants.
- a fine filter that provides the final polish to the water and delivers crystal-clear results.
How does the filtration work in the myAQUA 1900?
The system’s purification process takes place in several steps: First, the water passes through the PP fine filter, a first line of defense against coarse dirt and impurities. With a pore size of just 1 micron, it’s a true hero that traps rust, sand, and other larger particles to pave the way for the finer stages of water purification. The water then flows into the second cartridge—the C1 carbon filter—where it is rid of all traces of odors, discoloration, and chlorine, as well as troublesome herbicides, pesticides, and medication residues. This step removes chemical contaminants from the water and prepares it for the next stage of purification.

A central component of the system is the R-membrane. With an almost unimaginably fine pore size of 0.0001 microns, it retains up to 99% of all contaminants, salts, heavy metals, and even bacteria. Only the purest water molecules are allowed to pass through this fine barrier, resulting in a level of water purity that is second to none.
In the final stage of the process, you have a choice: Either the water passes through a second carbon filter (C2), which acts as a final safeguard, or a resin filter that removes even the finest traces of silicate and nitrate.

Incidentally, the system is not only a technological masterpiece but also a prime example of user-friendliness. An LED and an audible signal let you know when it’s time to replace the filters. We’ll explain what the LED signals generally mean and how to safely replace the cartridges in a later chapter.
A Clever Addition—The Arka myAQUA 1900 Resin Filter
The resin filter is an indispensable tool for every passionate aquarist. This sophisticated filter harnesses the power of ion-exchange resins to magically purify the water in your aquarium. Think of the resin filter as a talented alchemist that flows through the water and cleanses it. Inside are tiny, porous resin beads—loaded with ions just waiting to bind with unwanted substances in your aquarium water. As the water passes through the filter, these resins bind specific ions such as nitrate or silicate—two major causes of algae growth—and exchange them for more harmless ions, often sodium or hydrogen ions. In this way, unwanted elements are removed from the water, leaving it clean and healthy. In addition, the resin filter can adjust the water hardness, ensuring that your underwater world always remains in ideal balance.

Important: Before you begin, make sure all parts included in the package are present:

First, choose a suitable location for installation. Make sure you have enough room to move around so you can work comfortably. Here’s what you need to do during installation and assembly:
What you should know beforehand: Take a look at the connections on your reverse osmosis system. There are four of them:
- for wastewater (Waste)
- for power (Power)
- for pure reverse osmosis water (Pure)
- for the water inlet (Inlet)
We’ll explain how to connect them correctly in a moment. But first, here’s a quick reminder of the tools you’ll need if you want to install and set up the myAQUA 1900 on your own.

Step 1: Preparing the Hose Connections
First, remove the shipping locks from the hose connections. To do this, press down on the movable ring of the connection and pull the lock out.
Step 2: Inserting the cartridges
- The cartridges are labeled so you know exactly where each one goes.
- Unscrew the safety cap.
- Check the O-rings and insert the cartridge. You can then secure it using the filter wrench provided.

Step 3: Attaching the Hose Connections
Remove the small protective caps from the connections using tweezers and prepare them for attaching the hoses.
Step 4: Cutting the hoses
to size The thinner hose is needed for wastewater (Waste) and osmosis water (Pure). Cut it to the required length. It’s best to use combination pliers for a clean, straight cut.
Step 5: Connecting to the Water Source
Now it’s time to supply water to the system. You have two options to choose from:
- Using the water connection adapter
: -
First, install a gasket on the adapter.- Connect the
adapter to your water line. - Now connect the water inlet hose to the adapter. - Using a T-fitting:
This method allows for a direct connection to the main water line.
—Close the angle valve and loosen the reinforced hose with a pipe wrench. (Some residual water may leak out here, so it’s best to have a towel handy.)
- Attach the T-fitting to the angle valve and screw the reinforced hose onto the other end of the T-fitting. Use the pipe wrench to tighten the connection so that everything is sealed tightly in the end.
—Make sure all connections are tight. To do this, turn the angle valve back on, let the faucet run, and check to see if water is leaking from any of your pipe connections. If not, you’ve done everything right!
Step 6: Prepare the Drain Connection
- Use the cordless screwdriver to drill a hole in the drain pipe of the siphon for the drain hose.
- Remove the clamp, place the foam gasket at the drilled hole, and thread the drain hose through one half of the clamp and the drilled hole. Then securely fasten the entire clamp to the drain pipe.
Step 7: Installing the Hoses
Now install the prepared hoses. Note the following:
- The water supply hose is connected to the T-fitting or adapter.
- The drain hose is connected to the siphon or the drainage system.
- The reverse osmosis water hose is routed to the collection tank or directly into the aquarium.
Step 8: Connecting the Power Plug and Hoses
Once the hoses are properly installed and leak-free, you can plug in the power cord. The system is now ready for use.
Important: Thoroughly flush the reverse osmosis system before starting it up!
Before you can use the treated water for your aquarium, flush the system thoroughly once. This removes any remaining particles from the filters and prepares the system for regular operation. This takes between 30 minutes and one hour. Use the included TDS meter to check the water’s purity and ensure it meets the ideal conditions for your aquarium.
