Calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+) are among the main components of natural seawater, along with sodium, potassium, chloride, and sulfate. For calcareous organisms, such as stony corals and calcareous red algae, magnesium and, above all, calcium are important growth factors—both elements form the basic substance of the calcareous skeleton. In addition, numerous biochemical processes involve magnesium and calcium. The decrease in magnesium and calcium concentrations—due to cellular metabolism on the one hand and incorporation into the skeleton on the other—requires regular monitoring and, if necessary, replenishment of both ions in marine aquariums. This ensures optimal, natural living conditions for all organisms and helps prevent long-term damage.

In natural seawater, the calcium content is 400–410 mg/l and the magnesium content is 1280–1320 mg/l, with a fixed ratio of 1:3.25 between them. Due to chemical and biochemical interactions between calcium and magnesium, this concentration ratio should also be maintained in saltwater aquariums.

With the high-resolution Tropic Marin® Calcium/Magnesium Combitest Professional titration test, the concentration of both elements can be reliably and separately determined with an accuracy of 4 mg/l Ca and 20 mg/l Mg, respectively.
