General information about terrarium lighting

The lighting for your terrarium depends on your animals’ lighting needs

  • Do your animals need a lot or a little light?

  • Do your animals need UV radiation or not?

  • Do your animals need a different temperature during the day than at night?

  • How far are your animals from the light source?

By answering these questions, you can determine what type of lamp—and possibly an additional heating mat—your animals need. Lamps such as the JBL Reptil LED Daylight are ideal for lighting terrariums with plants. If the animals also require UV light, you’ll need to supplement with a JBL UV-Spot Plus or a JBL L-U-W lamp. These also produce heat. For animals that do not require UV light, such as many amphibians, the JBL Reptil LED Daylight is ideal and should then be supplemented with a heat-generating system depending on the species. For amphibians from colder regions, a heat-generating system is simply omitted.

The PAR value indicates how much of the lamp’s radiation can actually be used by plants for photosynthesis. PAR is the abbreviation for Photosynthetically Active Radiation. A PAR value of over 100, measured at a distance of 20 cm, indicates that the lamp promotes the growth of terrarium plants very effectively.
