. In their natural habitats, reptiles, amphibians, and other animals we keep in terrariums obtain their essential vitamins, minerals, and trace elements from their diet. Although we strive to provide a diet as close to nature as possible when caring for terrarium animals, we cannot quite achieve this. For example, when we feed live food such as crickets or grasshoppers, these animals do NOT come from the natural habitat of our terrarium animals and therefore do not have access to their normal diet! Often, for cost reasons, live food is given no food at all or only low-quality food, unlike in nature. Therefore, enriching the food with JBL PROTERRA REPTILFLUID is very helpful in providing our pets with the correct vitamin dosage.
A good and well-known example is poison dart frogs, which lose their toxicity in captivity because certain ants are no longer available to them as food. While this doesn’t bother the frogs—and we can even breed them successfully in a terrarium—their diet-dependent toxicity is simply lost.
