Spirulina are blue-green algae, some species of which—such as S. platensis, used here—have ideal protein content for ornamental fish nutrition. Incidentally, the 20% spirulina content in JBL PRONOVO SPIRULINA food is optimal—any more would not be healthy for the fish! The natural astaxanthin (a carotenoid) in the algae promotes beautiful coloration in the fish. This is another reason why spirulina algae are very popular for feeding ornamental fish.
Probiotic or Prebiotic—Which Is Better?
Probiotic foods, such as certain types of yogurt, contain live bacterial cultures designed to promote health—but only if consumed in large quantities. Such foods—including probiotic fish food—can spoil easily and then have the opposite effect. Incidentally, the positive health effects are quite controversial.
Prebiotics are “substrates that are selectively utilized by host microorganisms and confer a health benefit.” Scientists agree that these promote digestion and, consequently, health. For our fish, there’s another key benefit: better digestion leads to less waste being excreted, which reduces the load on the water, keeping it cleaner and minimizing algae problems.
Flakes or pellets?
Honestly: It’s a matter of personal preference! There are very few arguments for or against one type of food over the other. If you use an automatic feeder like the JBL AutoFood, you MUST choose pellet food, since almost all automatic feeders are designed only for pellets. If you plan to use an automatic feeder during your next vacation, get your fish used to the pellets from the feeder WELL IN ADVANCE. Some fish actually have a hard time adjusting from pellets to flakes—or vice versa. Imagine if you’d always eaten soft cornflakes and were now trying whole-grain muesli for the first time.
