A healthy aquarium or pond with conditions close to nature The correct water parameters in an aquarium or pond depend on the fish population and the plants present. Even if the water looks clear, it may still be contaminated. If water parameters are poor, diseases or algae can develop in the aquarium or pond. To maintain a healthy aquarium or pond with conditions close to nature, it is important to regularly monitor and adjust water parameters. For every water analysis, JBL offers water tests in the form of rapid tests or color-change tests. These determine a specific parameter or multiple parameters simultaneously. These water tests can help identify algae problems and detect elevated levels of nitrate, nitrite, potassium, magnesium, and other parameters. Why test? In aquariums, phosphate enters the water mainly through the fish’s digestive processes and from uneaten food. In ponds, phosphates enter the water primarily through fallen leaves and decaying pond plants or algae. Under unfavorable conditions, phosphate levels can reach values that are sometimes 100 times or more higher than natural levels. As an inevitable consequence, unwanted algae then multiply at an explosive rate. Recommended phosphate levels: Freshwater aquarium (community tank): 0–0.4 mg/l; Malawi and Lake Tanganyika aquariums: 0–0.4 mg/l; Planted aquariums with few fish (aquascaping): 0.1–1.5 mg/L; Marine aquariums: 0–0.1 mg/L; Ponds: <0.05 mg/L
