Axolotls are amphibians, like newts and frogs. Unlike other amphibians, they retain their larval stage—with external gill tufts—for their entire lives. Axolotls are native to a lake in Mexico that was located at a high altitude and thus had low temperatures around 20 °C. Today, Mexico City has expanded so much that the lake lies within the city limits and, due to trash and other pollution, is now virtually devoid of life. As a result, the axolotl is considered extinct in its original habitat.
