A healthy aquarium or pond with conditions
close to nature The correct water parameters in an aquarium or pond depend on the fish population and the plants present. Even if the water looks clear, it may still be contaminated. Poor water parameters can lead to diseases or algae growth in the aquarium or pond. To maintain a healthy aquarium or pond with conditions close to nature, it is important to regularly monitor and adjust water parameters. For every water analysis, JBL offers water tests in the form of rapid tests or color-change tests. These determine a specific parameter or multiple parameters simultaneously. These water tests can help identify algae problems and detect elevated levels of nitrate, nitrite, potassium, magnesium, etc. Why test? The breakdown or mineralization process of all organic substances in aquariums and ponds proceeds through the following stages: proteins > ammonium > nitrite > nitrate. By measuring these stages, conclusions can be drawn about whether the aquarium or pond system is “functioning” properly. If the ammonium or nitrite level is too high, this can lead to an imbalance in the bacterial ecosystem. As a rule, ammonium will not be detectable in a well-maintained aquarium with an efficient biological filter or in a properly designed garden pond. Ammonium is an important plant nutrient and is normally not toxic to fish. However, depending on the pH level, the ammonium ion can produce ammonia, which is toxic to fish. Recommended ammonium levels: Freshwater aquarium (community tank): < 0.25 mg/l Malawi and Lake Tanganyika aquariums: < 0.25 mg/l Planted aquariums with few fish (aquascaping): < 0.25 mg/l Saltwater aquariums: 0–0.25 mg/l Ponds: < 0.1 mg/l
