The filters draw in the aquarium water and remove impurities and waste products from the water through the filter media.  Fine filtration Carbomec activ is a highly active filter carbon designed to remove medication residues, water discoloration, and high-molecular-weight organic contaminants from freshwater aquariums. Carbomec activ is adjusted to pH 7 and is therefore ideally suited for use in the pH range of 6.5 to 7.5. Safe to Use It does not release phosphate into the water and does not increase electrical conductivity.
