Produktbeschreibung
JBL BioNitratEx - Bio-filter media for removing nitrate from the aquarium
Biological filter media that breaks down bacteria and, in the process, removes algae-promoting nitrate from freshwater or saltwater
Simply place the filter media in the internal or external filter and do not refill until it has been broken down by the bacteria after about 6 months
The bioballs are colonized by bacteria that form a thick biofilm. Below the biofilm, the oxygen content decreases, allowing the bacteria there to extract oxygen from nitrate and thereby break it down
Water-stabilizing effect: Since bacterial decomposition processes produce pH-lowering acids, the bioballs contain acid-binding minerals to stabilize the water

General information about JBLNitratEx—how does nitrate removal from the aquarium work?
If there’s nothing left to eat, you’ll starve
—nitrates and phosphates are the main nutrients for algae. If you remove one or both of these nutrients from the water, the algae can no longer grow!
However, bacteria break down nitrate only under certain conditions: Only when there is no oxygen left and, at the same time, a carbon source (food for the bacteria) is present do the bacteria extract oxygen from the nitrate and break it down.
How JBL BioNitratEx
Works With JBL BioNitratEx, bacteria colonize the surface of the balls within about 4 weeks and form a thick biofilm. Beneath the biofilm, a low-oxygen zone forms, where the bacteria then switch to “nitrate respiration” and break down the algae-promoting nitrate (NO3). The bioballs serve as food, and nitrate serves as an oxygen source for the bacteria. As a result, the bioballs gradually shrink over time (easy to monitor visually) and eventually disappear completely. This process takes about 6–12 months, depending on the nitrate load. At that point, new bioballs should be added.
Snails
: If many snails come into contact with the JBL BioNitratEx balls, they will eat the biofilms on their surfaces. This allows oxygen to reach the lowest bacterial layers again, which then no longer need to extract oxygen from the nitrate to break it down. If there are many snails, it may therefore be advisable to place the JBL BioNitratEx balls in a fine mesh bag that prevents snails from accessing them.
Difference from JBL NitratEx
: JBL BioNitratEx works in a purely biological way through bacterial nitrate breakdown. JBL NitratEx, on the other hand, is a synthetic resin that binds nitrate from the water (freshwater only!) and exchanges it for harmless chloride (ion exchange function). The advantage of this system is that you can use it quickly, e.g., to remove nitrate from tap or well water.
