Reverse osmosis systems produce optimal source water for marine and freshwater aquariums. Often, many water problems can only be solved by using reverse osmosis water. Reverse osmosis systems operate on the principle of physical filtration. Unlike ion exchangers, for example, which replace hardness-forming ions (e.g., calcium) with other, non-hardness-forming ions (e.g., sodium), a reverse osmosis system physically removes contaminants (e.g., silicate, nitrate) and hardness-forming substances are physically removed from the water. The water flows through a semipermeable membrane in the reverse osmosis system under the pressure (2–6 bar max.) typically found in household water lines. The substances dissolved in the water (contaminants, salts, or hardness-forming substances) cannot pass through the membrane’s fine mesh structure and remain in the wastewater. This wastewater is discharged as concentrate and can be safely used for cleaning, watering plants, or general household purposes. Dupla reverse osmosis systems have a retention rate of 95–98% of all contaminants in tap water.

Tip: By adding a Dupla ultrapure water filter (optional accessory) downstream, even the smallest traces of silicates and nitrates can be completely removed without leaving any residue.
