KH+ liquid

Reliably increases carbonate hardness and stabilizes the pH level in saltwater aquariums. Promotes the growth of all calcium-dependent organisms such as stony corals, calcareous tube worms, clams, and various calcareous red algae. Suitable for dosing pumps. Contains 5,000° dKH and 1,000 mg K.

The main elements—hydrogen carbonates (HCO₃), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg)—have a decisive influence on water stability (pH, alkalinity/carbonate hardness) in reef aquariums. The KH/alkalinity in a saltwater aquarium should be between KH 7 and KH 9 °dH and is crucial for the buffer capacity of the saltwater. KH+ liquid reliably increases carbonate hardness and buffers the pH value in the saltwater aquarium. Carbonates are constantly consumed by many calcium-consuming organisms such as stony corals, mussels, calcareous tubeworms, various calcareous red algae, as well as through biogenic decalcification. Regular addition prevents large pH fluctuations and a deficiency in all calcium-forming organisms. Also contains the trace element potassium.

Dosage:
20 ml increases carbonate hardness/alkalinity by 1 °dKH per 100 l.

 

Alkalinity (KH) is a measure of the water’s buffering capacity and is crucial for maintaining a stable pH level in the aquarium. In a saltwater aquarium, alkalinity (KH) should be between KH 6 and KH 8°dH. In natural seawater, the alkalinity is approximately 7.0°dH. This value remains stable in the ocean due to the vast volume of water; however, in an aquarium, biochemical processes can significantly influence and alter the carbonate hardness. 
Stone corals, clams, soft corals, and calcareous algae remove calcium and carbonate ions from the water during calcification and deposit calcium in the form of calcium carbonate. This reduces the Ca and KH levels. Regular addition of Power KH+ or KH+ liquid stabilizes alkalinity and prevents dangerous drops in pH. Due to the varying number of organisms, each aquarium has its own specific needs. In some cases, a thriving aquarium can “consume 1 KH per day.” Therefore, the KH level must be checked at least once a week.

 

Background: Carbonate Hardness or Alkalinity? Carbonate hardness is an outdated term from drinking water analysis and is defined as the portion of earth alkali metals that can be precipitated by heating to form carbonates (scale). This is also where the term “temporary hardness” comes from. However, due to the different compositions of seawater and drinking water, seawater analysis does not use the terms “temporary hardness” or “carbonate hardness”; instead, it uses only the term “alkalinity.” Alkalinity is therefore equivalent to the simplified notation KH.
